Work created for a brief in which we were to use typography to create some form of illusion. I used a paper cut which creates a flap of paper that appears to be too large to have been cut out from the sheet, printing the phrase 'Present & Correct' as an ironic touch.

The Urban Nomad movement was not a movement involving the production of physical ephemera, but instead it involved the circulation of D.I.Y manuals detailing how an individual could make their own custom items, such as shelters and furniture. THE NOMAD LECTURES

Every social movement needs a catalyst. This set of Nomadic Lectures would roam the city, with each lecture in a different location, with a different speaker talking about a different topic. This poster advertises the event, which would hopefully stimulate the public and spread the ideals and advantages of a modern Urban Nomad movement.

A collaborative project with Walter Hamilton. His work, concerning over-consumption and reducing his lifestyle to only the most necessary items, aligned with the ideals of an Urban Nomad, and together we devised a kit consisting of a set of Enough boxes, and a roll of Too Much bin bags. The set of boxes would vary in size depending on the items they are supposed to contain. Shown here is a box designed to contain 'enough' clothes. When it is full, the laser-cut text becomes apparent. As you rid yourself of unecessary items, using the bin bags (to take items to the charity shop...) the roll gets smaller, and the message 'too much' becomes invisible.

E-PAPER STICKER

Continuing with the concept of a code for Urban Nomads, I devised the idea of applying the code to a wirelessly updatable e-paper sticker. The sticker would be applied at a location, and as information about that location was updated via text or website input, the sticker would update. The user would then interact with the sticker via a touchscreen element on the sticker. Although this technology does not exist in unison at present, wireless technology, e-paper and touchscreen technology all exist separately, so combined version of these would be possible.

A code designed to allow Urban Nomads to communicate information to each other about the sevices available at a location. Based on the shape of a community of shelters, each segment of the octagon represents a different service. If the segment is present, in black, then a serivce is available. Hence, a full octagon is a perfect site for a community of Urban Nomads.

The interior of the shelter. The shelter is large enough for a double bed, large table for working or dining, and a chair. The central seam allows lamps and suchlike to be fastened above head-height. The shape of the shelter determines its zoning. The low end is ideal for sleeping, while the middle is tall enough to sit to work or eat. At the peak, there is enough room to stand and if an internal curtain were fitted, one could shower in this zone. At the entrance, which is tall enough to stand, there is room for a chair or portable toilet. Interior zoning and privacy could be enhanced with a segmented inner structure.

A scale model of the shelter. Made from waterproof ripstop nylon, the shelter can be erected in number of ways. Shown here is its regular form and, left, as an open fronted shelter. Note that despite the raised front, the shelter still only requires one attachment point. The shelter could also be erected as a tall tunnel or as a more traditional peaked tent shape.

In an Urban Nomadic lifestyle, community is key. The beauty of this shelter design is its ability to interlock into a variety of formations, hence allowing small communities to form extended, inter-connecting spaces and providing the prospect of more private outdoor spaces bounded by a ring of shelters. It also allows the individual to extend his or her own living quarters.

Sketches detailing locations for the shelter. Its wedge-like shape allows it to fit into tight spaces such as corners, which may otherwise go unused. Also, its ability to deflect wind would allow it to be used on a rooftop, another commonly unused space. The shelter does not need poles for support, provided a raised point is available to tie onto, such as a drainpipe.

Initial sketches of an Urban Nomadic shelter. After looking at a number of pre-existing nomadic shelters, such as the Yurt, it occured to me that, while portable, it would be difficult to do so on foot without a car or trolley. Hence, this shelter is designed to be made from fabric, and to be light enough for one person to carry in a rucksack or suchlike. Its shape, a tetrahedron, is both strong and able to deflect wind effectively.

"The Urban Nomads were a scattered community of young designers who shared a common image of an emerging highly mobile and very sophisticated youth culture which sought liberty through simple technologies of self-sufficiency. It was about living light for the sake of mobility with a reliance on self-made artifacts made from common materials and industrial cast-offs for the sake of economy and efficiency."

For some time now, I have been interested in a lesser known social movement that occured in the design community in the late 1960's, the Urban Nomads. Inspired by this essay a few years ago, I have been gradually building my knowledge of the movement, and this self-initiated project seems to be a good opportunity to explore the movement further.

This piece is part of a body of research about paper cups. While considering uses, the idea of coffee rings came about, and this presentation of concentric rings references the rings of a tree, the origin of the cup.

During a discussion concerning the definition of drawing, the question arose as to whether a drawing must be two-dimensional. Opinions were divided.

This work explores the concept of dimensions.

A circle, though appearing two dimensional, is actually one dimensional.

A mobius strip, although apearing three-dimensional, is actually two dimensional.

A sheet of paper, though by some to be as two-dimensional as you can get, is a three-dimensional object.

The idea focuses on the fact that an earthquake which occurs in the book drastically changes the tone and hence divides the book into 'before and after' the event.

TRIVIAL PURSUITS

2 pages created as part of a collaborative project to produce a book called Trivial Pursuits.

These pages are based on the topic of History.

On 2nd September 1752, Great Britain (and its colonies) changed from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar. This meant that people went to bed on the 2nd, but woke up on the 14th. Due to the lack of education at the time, many people believed that 11 days of their lives had been 'stolen' by the government.

This work plays on the idea of days missing from the calendar. On the first page, the dates appear to be missing, but when held up to the light, the dates appear (due to show-through from the following page).

A group project, based on the novel, The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende.

In this film we attempted to capture the essense of the book, which is rich in content and imagery, through the accumulated items of the family; many of which are described in the book.

I do not feel that this film is particularly successful in achieving its goal as, in hindsight, collecting the objects required in the available time was difficult. I feel that the brief would have been fulfilled more effectively if a different narrative and style was used in the film.

In this project, within the constraint of 1 hour, we were asked to take a photograph in response to a word. In my case, 'fear'.

This photograph is taken of a footbridge that ends in mid air. It never crosses fully to its destination, and hence becomes a rather ominous overhang.

I chose to shoot a high-contrast silhouette to make the image more stark, and less beautiful, as well as giving it a more graphic form.In more forgiving circumstances, I would have used a different lens to gain a more wide angle view, so that more sky would be present in the image, and the footbridge end would be more clear.

A storyboard based on the novel The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende

This tale is far too rich to condense into 60 seconds of film, so the concept behind this storyboard is based on a camera weaving through the piles of objects mentioned in the novel that bear relevence to each particular family member. In doing so, one hopes that the essence of the novel is captured. At the end of the film, the camera zooms out to reveal that the items are formed in the shape of a rudimentary house similar to that described in the novel.

A piece designed to oppose Rory Hamilton's original intentions.

After first altering Rory's original meaning, I then had to undermine or oppose it. His work was originally designed to change one's perception of packaging, and hence it was difficult to identify something to oppose without merely presenting the book and the jar or matchbook as separate objects. Instead I focused on something else that he said when describing his work...'it would be refreshing to get a book in a jar'.

I set out to show, very simply, that this may not be as 'refreshing' as expected, as jars are fragile objects that do not lend themselves well to this kind of rigours that a book might undergo. Hence, I smashed the jar, dividing the cover of an Agatha Christie novel over the shards of glass, which provides a rather ironic subplot to the downfall of the jar.

A 'Matchbook' created in response to Rory Hamiltons work

At this point in the project, we were required to swap our work produced so far with another student. In my case, I swapped with Rory Hamilton, whose work involved the "swapping of identity...to challenge our ancient understanding of what a book or novel physically is". This concept was manifested by adding book covers onto large jars and matchboxes.

My task at this point was to use these items to create a slightly different meaning. I chose to create a matchbook, using the pun in the word to inform my work. By replacing ordinary cardboard matches with the pages of a book, my aim is to suggest the idea that, just as one may 'devour' a book of an evening, the flames devour the book line by line as one uses the matches.

THE WORLDS GREATEST INVENTION - E

A paper mechanism based on the letter 'E'

For this project, each person within a group was assigned a letter. In my case, this letter was 'E'. We were then asked to research the letter to find out some interesting facts about it, and then design a paper mechanism that somehow reflected the information gathered.

In my case, I discovered that 'E' is the most used letter in the English language, and that this makes it extremely useful to cryptographers when they decifer code.

In order to reflect this, I employed a mechanism that folds an infinite number of times, to reflect the high usage of the letter, while arranging the E's (printed in the caseroom) in a rather abstract fashion so that the viewer almost has to 'decifer' the image themselves.

This image, a combination of a £20 note and a razor blade, is designed to reflect the economic crisis that the world is currently encountering, and its subsequent effect on the general public as they become more and more reluctuant to spend or invest.

This brief asked us to combine two images to create a new meaning.

The concept shown above combines weapons and feathers to create a visual lie, making the deadly object appear beautiful. Inspiration was taken from fishing flies. However, I am not sure whether this combination of images truly fulfills the brief, and hence I intend to generate further ideas.

One of a series of drawings created on location at the Glasgow Museum of Anatomy.

For this brief we were asked to create a series of drawings from specimens we found at the museum. With many of these specimens being rather grotesque, such as whole human heads in jars, we were encouraged to capture our own reactions and reflections within our drawings.

It occured to me that once one detaches oneself from what exactly the contents of the jars are, they become much less unnerving. To capture this idea, I found an old, empty, photo album. Each page had been labelled by the previous owner, and so when I created new images in the book, they each assumed these unrelated titles that detach the subjects from their original context.

At this point in the project, we were each assigned a scenario that affects our city. Mine was that it snows unrelentlessly.

In response to this brief, and taking inspiration from extract from the story I wrote (included above) created a short animation using a flatbed scanner.

It documents the moment at which someone living inside the city structure encounters an outsider, through the glass, for the first time.

As I began to consider navigation within the city, I was keen to consolidate my ideas as to what exactly the city was like. To do this, I wrote a short tale about a man journeying down through the structure.

I envisage the city as a series of suspended terraces supporting heavy industry; a city that is not at all pleasant to be in. Hence, I based the story on Dante's 'Inferno', a book in which Dante journeys down through the nine levels of hell. This is written as an epic poem, and hence I attempted to parody this

theme, with each stanza having nine lines to parody .

When collating the book, I printed the text on tracing paper, so that the following pages show through. This creates a muddled feel that alludes to the style of the city and reflects the story, in which the smoke is dense, but thins the further one descends. The cover of the book is as ambiguous as the exterior of the city.

Continuing with the concept of using processes to generate graphics, I created a stencil, through which I applied spraymount onto an envelope. I then sent the envelope back to myself.

The dirt and grime that accumulated on the glue during the envelopes journey revealed the message. Post.

CATALOGUE PAGE

A simulation of how the pages of a catalogue page layout interact.

After stages 1 and 2 of this workshop, we were asked to design a layout for a catalogue page that included an image of our object and a text extract of our choice.

I chose the section of text that I posted in stage 1, which was written from the bottom right of a page to the top left. I recreated it exactly, mistakes included, using Baskerville.

At the end of this extract, I wrote 'I want to see a mirror to see if what I am writing looks wrong'. By printing the text on tracing paper overlaid on the image, one is able to read the mirrored version of the text on the reverse side of the paper.

After making a pinhole camera, I set out to explore the city. Many mistakes later, particularly when experimenting with long overnight exposures indoors, I began to get some images that had the exposures and compositions that I was after.

The image above is one such image, seen after some post-production in order to flip and invert an otherwise negative and back-to-front image.

The brief for this project was to generate a miniature city in one day, working in a small group.

Realising that in the future, flat land to build on may be in short supply, our group decided to build upwards, on a series of tiers.

The result is a rather industrial looking city, a city which leaves a lot to be imagined; perfect for the following stages of the brief, where our ideas about the city will be developed on a more individual basis.

WRITING WORKSHOP - STAGE 2

To resolve problems with my previous model, I created a new version using photosensitive paper. Once the model was completed, I exposed it from one side using a camera flash. I then developed the object as a whole.

By using photosensitive paper, and exposing it using a single flash, I have provided a suggestion of the word 'Flashbulb' whilst also referencing the earlier days of photography, when the public would have photos developed by a chemist, due to the chemicals required. The 'Thinking' element is referenced by the six separate leaves coming together to form one cohesive object, just as several thoughts come together to form one solid idea.

WRITING WORKSHOP - STAGE 2

'make an object which illustrates your chosen word pair and also reflects the modifier word'

The modifier word was chosen from a list. My modifier word is 'Medicine'. My model must therefore reflect the words 'Flashbulb', 'Thinking' and 'Medicine'.

I feel that the best way to capture 'Flashbulb' in an object is to create an object that is extremely sensitive to light. I also like the idea of combining various elements to create one cohesive object.

Hence I have created this abstract origami form from 6 leaves of square tin foil, in the hope that, when exposed to a flash, the various folds and contours would pop out at the camera.

However, aside from the rather sterile aesthetic of the piece, I do not feel that the modifier word 'Medicine' has been reflected.

WRITING WORKSHOP

a selection of excersises from a day-long writing workshop

 In this writing workshop, we were encouraged to write without thinking, hence allowing our minds to relax and our writing to become more free and expressive.

The above image shows a selection of these excersises.

The long strip of abstracted text at the top of the image was created by writing continuously for a few minutes, but only on one line, hence the writing became heavily overlaid.

The bottom-left section of the image was created by starting at the bottom-right of a page and writing from right to left. The right-hand section is a reflected image of the left, showing what I was intending to write. As you can see, while the writing is at first illegible, but by the final few lines the text becomes legible.

The culmination of these excersises was to find a word within our writings that contained a smaller word. The word I chose was 'Scrawling' - containing the word 'Raw'. We then created a new word using this smaller word - 'crawlspace'.

The group then laid out their final words, and we chose two words that we found interesting. I chose 'Flashbulb' and 'Thinking'. These words are vital to the continuation of the project.

SUBVERSION

The brief for this one day project was to 'take a subject and, using the design skills at your disposal, subvert it in some way'.

Working in a pair, we were initially considering subverting a brand, such as Apple or Nike, yet the more we explored the idea we realised that artists such as Banksy (and others within his genre) are already subverting such subjects.

Hence, we decided to subvert the 'Banksy genre'.

To do this we focused on the paint spray can as a device to be paralleled with a deodorant spray. By suggesting that Banksy endorsed a global corporation, Nivea, we undermined his subversion of capitalism by including him within it; we subverted the subverter.

TRIATHLON

brief: [in groups] to design a triathlon event

Our event involved a series of large rocks arranged in a long line. The competing group was lined along these stones, one stone each, and the aim was for the last person to hop from stone to stone (each occupying one person already) and end on the first available stone. The next last person then repeated this, and so on until all members of the team was stood on one large rock together.

As each team member arrived at this final rock, they used a piece of chalk to draw a part of the mysterious Loch Lomond monster. By the time all of the team members had arrived at the finishing stone, the drawing was complete.

This process involving stamping letters using lime juice in the place of ink, creates lettering that is, initially, invisible.

However, when the apparently blank page is then exposed to a light source the image, in this case, letters, become visible in a beautiful brown hue similar to that of a coffee stain.
